Research Mentorship Programme

Join the Programme!

Since 2016, ESA helps young anaesthetists to get in touch with recognized European researchers via its Mentorship Program. The aims of this Program are:

I. To preserve and transfer accumulated professional knowledge within the anesthesia community.

II. To support individual academic anaesthesiologists in achieving their potential as researchers.

III. To contribute to the ESA mission to connect anaesthetists in the field of research in Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine and Pain with senior experts (Mentors) as a platform for professional exchange and mutual learning.

Experienced Investigators covering a wide range of anaesthesiology topics will be selected as mentors and will be matched with mentees by their field of interest. Mentors and mentees will be encouraged to meet regularly and agree on an aim for the mentorship as well as the logistics (how often, where and when to meet). The mentorship can last up to 2 years and the mentor and mentee will be asked to provide feedback to the ESA.

This year again, ESA is glad to open the applications! Are you a young anesthetist freshly came out from college, or an anesthetist who wants to evolve in the research field? Are you a professional anesthetist, with a consequent background who wants to share its knowledge to enhance the level of research? Hesitate no more. This Program provides you with lots of benefits, either if you are a mentor or a mentee.

Important information: the applications are open from the 4th of November 2019 to the 15th of January 2020. The results will be communicated by the beginning of April. If you’re selected, you will be invited on the 29th May to the 1st June 2020 at the Euroanaesthesia meeting in Barcelona: write it down in your agenda!

Eligibility Requirements:

The following requirements apply for both Mentors and Mentees. The Mentorship Programme Leader has the final decision regarding eligibility:

  • Mentors must be affiliate, active or retired ESA member.
  • Mentees must be current trainee/medical students or active members of the ESA and working in a European Institution at the moment of application.
  • Country of Institution should be a European country as defined by the World Health Organisation.

  • As many universities/healthcare systems will have already a mentorship programmes in place: it is important to ensure that two programmes do not “conflict”. One example would be if an ESA member is acting as mentor on the ESA programme but has declined to participate in his employer’s or national programme. The Mentorship Programme Leader will be in charge of avoiding this kind of problems.
  • Available to attend the Mentorship Programme Kick Off meeting at ESA Euroanaesthesia
  • The Mentee must also provide a letter from their Head of Department to declare if he/she has the support from his/her “home department” to take part in the Programme.
